‘Santa Lucia Before the Judge’ by Lotto (1532)
Lotto makes a profound use of light and shadow, in a way that is reminiscent of Vermeer and suggests the use of optical projection to capture the subtle effects. Perspective reconstruction allows the geometry to be checked for optical accuracy.
